Gyokuro is the most highly ranked Japanese green leaf tea. Its aroma is richer than that of sencha even though it has tonic properties. This is because as soon as buds begin to spring in the end of April, the bushes are covered, so as to be in shadow all the time. Only top quality leaves are picked for this tea.
We are not big fans of Umami Burger, but when I saw the picture of their limited edition by José Andrés in the press and high praises in one of the blogs, I decided, it was worth a try.
José Andrés Burger
This is what it should have looked.
Unfortunately due to parking problems or should I call it nightmares in the Costa Mesa location we got our burger to go. It might have taken about 15 minutes before we finally got to eat our burger.
This was how sad it looked:
José Andrés Burger
Pork and Cured Ham Patty, Piquillo Pepper Confit, Caramelized Onion, Manchego Cheese, Aioli
It was a flavorful burger, but the thick pork patty was dried out and the burger very slippery to handle. My husband was very unhappy and hardly ate half of it. Because I was hungry I managed to eat two third. We will never get a burger to go again!! My husband never wants to return to Umami!!
pistachio cake donut was a total disappointment in texture and flavor. It was very doughy and sticky and too sweet.
This donut had a better flavor due to the blueberries but once again the texture was too doughy.
I noticed their quality is not what it used to be and I hope when they bring back my chocolate donut, it won’t have the sticky and doughy problem. Also most of their donuts has too much sugary glaze. I wish they would come up with some savory donuts.
We always stop here for lunch before we head back to CA. Food has always been fresh and tasty, service friendly and prices reasonable for the quality.
Pan Seared Salmon
Chia Seed Citrus reduction, Seasonal Veggies
My husband enjoyed his perfectly seared salmon with potatoes, spinach, peppers, sitting on a delicious pool of chia seed citrus reduction.
Greek Salad with Hanger Steak
Cherry Tomatoes, Red Onions, Olive Tapenade, Cucumbers, Feta, Greek Vinaigrette
I enjoyed my fresh and tasty Greek salad. The cherry tomatoes were sweet, the cucumbers crunchy and the greens were plenty. It had a little too much feta and tapenade for me, so next time I ask for a little adjustment. I added hanger steak to my salad and it was perfectly grilled to med-rare. A very satisfying dish.
No Pasta Vegetarian Lasagna
Sweet Potato, Kale, Eggplant
We got this dish to go and it was pretty good and rich and a bargain for under $10. The lasagna was layers of sweet mashed potatoes, kale, eggplant, cheese blend and Béchamel sauce. Two people could easily share this and a salad and be satisfied.
We also got their Chickpea, Coconut and Chocolate bites. Very good and gluten free for people that care for such a thing.
Their Green Goodness Smoothie is always a must for the drive back, because it keeps you hydrated without too much sugar. It was a combination of Granny Smith Apple, Avocado, Banana, Spinach, Kale, Ginger and a touch of Agave.
They are opening their second location at the Green Valley and we wish them luck.
Bondi Grill is the first venture for Australia’s Hurricane group. They baste their burgers, ribs and steaks with their special sauce and chargrill them.
Their service was polite and informative, but pushy!
This was a gift from the kitchen and although tasty, it was on a salty side.
Rustic Greek Salad
A little pricy for a mostly Romaine salad. There were some Chopped Cucumber, Tomato, Bell Pepper, Kalamata olives and Red Onion, but not enough to satisfy your Greek Salad craving. The Feta up top was tasty, but not enough for a large Greek Salad. The dressing needed more acid to give it a burst of flavor.
Sweet Potato Fries
It was fine, but on the soft side.
Bondisaurus Pork Ribs
This was their specialty and it was a free range, hormone and antibiotic free pork. We got the half portion for $22.95. At first it looked like a lot of food and a good deal. As we started eating the ribs we noticed there were not much meat on them. The sauce was overly sweet and got old fast. We were planning on trying their steak and burgers later on, but since they baste everything in their magic sauce, the chances are slim.
