In the past couple of months we have tried to get our porchetta cravings fixed at Parolli Rolli. Unfortunately on the days we stopped at SOCO, they were a no show, even though they were supposed to be there. Finally, on Valentine’s day we got lucky, sort of. We had to wait about forty minutes for their porchetta to get ready. At the end I felt like the wait was not worth it. We recently had a very good porchetta sandwich at Gjusta and this one paled in comparison.
My husband had this and he enjoyed it for the most part.
I thought for the price the charged, they didn’t give enough porchetta to make you feel satisfied. The salad of baby arugula and spinach was on the bland side. We really liked the side of the potatoes even more than the porchetta.
We stopped here with my brother and cousin and decided to stay for lunch. Their ordering system has changed since last time we visited. Now they have a ticket system. I wish I would have known that before wasting a few minutes staring at the delicious pastries. They still don’t have a seating area and if you are lucky, you find a counter space to eat your food at. On this day it was beyond crowded and we were forced to seat on milk crates outside. Not a comfortable way of eating your pricy but delicious food.
It was a very flavorful dish with lot’s of warm spices like taking a vacation in Morraco. The yogurt was a nice touch. My kind of dish.
Juicy, flavorful porchetta with a right amount of fat. The crusty baguette and the horseradish sauce made it one of the best porchetta sandwiches we have had. At $15 it was a good size.
Chickpea Salad, Fingerling potato Salad
My brother preferred the chickpea salad and my cousin favorite was the fingerling salad.
Porchetta Melt with Rapini
My cousin had to wait a long time to get this and he was not a happy camper, but liked the sandwich.
Lamb Sausage Roll
My brother got this and he liked the flavorful lamb filling. He specially enjoyed the harissa ketchup.
Pain au Chocolat
We ate this later on in the day and it was pretty good with a nice dark chocolate filling unlike the sweet one from Maison Giraud Bakery.
This was a joke of a mocha. It was a very small size and did not have a mocha flavor. It was more like a latte.
My cousin and brother enjoyed their Mint limeade and you can never leave Gjusta without their heavenly Baklava croissant.
We had been to their first location in Huntington beach years ago and heard about their new location in Newport beach. My brother and cousin were visiting and after a day of snowboarding, they were starving and wanted to try this place. Considering they had only been open for 6 days, the food was spot on and the service was surprisingly friendly.
Lobster Roll Hot with Drawn Butter
My cousin and I both opted for the lobster roll. After my recent disappointing experience at the Shuck Oyster Bar, I was glad to eat a good lobster roll. The lobster was cooked perfectly and the roll was the right size. It also came with a side of their crunchy chips. They price their lobster according to the market value. On that day, according to the staff, at $16 it was the lowest they have seen. Let’s hope it stays in that price range for a while.
Fish & Chips Flakey White Fish served with Scratch-made Tartar Sauce and Fries
My husband opted for the single fish fry. I took a small bite, the batter was nice and crisp and the fish was moist. He also enjoyed the crispy fries.
My brother went with the staff’s recommendation and got the shrimp burrito. He said the shrimps were tasty, but as a whole, it had a little too much rice for his liking.
Ham & Cheese Croissant
This was a good version, but it would have been better if they used Gruyère cheese.
Even Though we had this the next day, it was still pretty good. Very buttery and smelled amazing.
Pain au Chocolat
This was a little too greasy and the chocolate was not as dark as we like. I will skip this one next time.
We had brunch here recently and it was not such a pleasant experience. Our waiter was so pushy, it was almost comical. He pushed sides, fruit, juice, cocktail…
Hanger Steak and Eggs, Roasted Baby Artichokes, Potato & Tapenade
I asked for my steak to be cooked to med-rare and once again it was cooked to medium. I guess that is the latest trend to overcook the steak. I told our waiter about the problem and instead of correcting the problem he insisted that the steak was cooked to med-rare and the sauce on the top was the reason it looked more cooked!! I said this does not look med-rare and his response was, it was their med-rare!! Really? I have never heard of this response before!! I figured I suck it up and eat it. The other problem was the mountain of unseasoned white potatoes on my plate. That is so 80’s. With all the different kind of potatoes out there, there is no excuse.
House-Made Corned Beef Hash Wild Mushrooms & Poached Eggs
This hash was 70% bread and potatoes, 20% wild mushrooms and only 10% corned beef. The poached eggs didn’t look that appetizing either. When is my husband going to loose his addiction to hash? I hope soon.
With the pushy service, over priced food and lack of care in customer service, We won’t be back any time soon.
