ARC is an American eatery located at SOCO in Costa Mesa. Everything is cooked over open fire. I have been wanting to try this restaurant for a while, but the early reviews were a mix. Finally we took the plunge and tried this place. I am glad we did.
Steak & Eggs
Duck Egg, Potato, Creme
My husband had this dish and really enjoyed it even though they forgot the egg. We told our server and they apologized and right away provided him with an egg. They serve this dish on a hot cast iron plate and because of that one side got cooked more than the other side and the steam made my picture blurry. The steak was very flavorful and this dish was a total comfort dish.
Grilled, Goat Cheese, Fresno
I was surprised at how beautifully this salad was arranged. Grilled little gems were great and went very well with the pickled Fresno, sweet cherry tomatoes and tangy goat cheese. The steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare but I prefered my husband’s steak to this one. The grilled bread was a nice touch and I shared it with my husband.
We have not been to the Wheat and Sons for few months. I called to find out what they were serving that day. When I heard steak sandwich, that was music to my ears. I was planing to buy some of their amazing pork chops, but unfortunately they are phasing out their meat program. I guess people are more interested in buying prepared food than buying high quality meat and poultry.
NY Strip Sandwich Yuzu koshu Mayo, Cucumber, Pickled Red Onion, Arugula
This was a great big sandwich. Nate, the chef sliced plenty of beautiful steak and sandwiched it between perfectly toasted ciabatta bread. I usually don’t eat white bread, but this hit the spot. The youzu koshu provided plenty of heat and pickled onion and cucumber great crunch. My silly husband felt that the sandwich had too much meat and not enough salt!! Really? I though the seasoning was perfect and even a little salty for me. At the end we left full and I was happy.
Frank Gehry is one of my favorite architects. I was excited to find out he has a house in Santa Monica.
You can read more about the house here
Coffee from Demitasse
This was one of the reasons I chose this place. Great coffee from the nearby Demitasse.
This was so good we wanted seconds, thirds … Great nutty flavor and light in sugar. A must try.
Smoked Salmon Tartine
Capers, Cream Cheese
I could not believe how big this dish was. Great smoked salmon on a crusty bread that not only tasted good, it looked great also. The side salad was very fresh and a great addition to the tartine. A must order for future visits.
Sunny Eggs, Toast
My husband played it safe and once again went for the hash! He seemed to enjoy it, but he said the brisket needed a little more seasoning.
Great brunch and right next to the Farmer’s Market. We will return.
Just watch for the soap dispenser in the bathroom. It stained both my top and my husband’s. I let the waitress know about it and hopefully they will fix it soon.
Kyoto is a Japanese cold water drip iced coffee. They had two versions using the same beans. One was acidic and the other one tasted bitter but complex and was the result of ten hours of drips. I picked the latter and drank the whole thing. I normally drink tea at home and coffee is not my best friend, so needless to say I had a restless night. It was worth a try though and pricy at $7.
My mom had this and liked it.
Berry Monkey Bread
I didn’t try this, but my family seemed to enjoy it.
It was pretty good with a deep chocolate flavor and thankfully not too sweet.
Prickly Pear Fruit & Mint Agua Fresca
My brother and father had this and they liked it. I took a sip and found it refreshing.
Wine Jelly, Sorrel Butter and pepper Jelly
The butter and all the spreads were great and went very well with the warm crusty bread. One of the reasons we love brunch here.
Grilled Octopus Gazpacho
Tomatillo, Cucumber, Avocado
My brother had this and I took a small bite. The octopus was very tender, but he felt the gazpacho needed a little acidity to brighten the flavors.
Steak and Eggs
Crispy Kennenbeck Potatoes, Arugula with Over medium Eggs
I always get this dish because the potatoes are the best, the steak very flavorful and the crusty bread sure puts a smile in your face.
Bread Pudding French Toast
Seasonal Berries, Maple syrup
My brother really enjoyed this.
Steak and Eggs
Crispy Kennenbeck Potatoes, Arugula with Scrambled Eggs
My mom had this and she ordered her steak med-rare, but what she got was more like med.
House Smoked Salmon
Bonito Crème Fraîche, Arugula,Lemon, Caper, Crostini
My father had this and enjoyed it. The smoked salmon was really great.
My family was in town so we stopped here to pick up a couple of things for them to try.
This looked prettier than it tasted. It had a lot of layers including the crunchy praline and it had a subtle coffee taste.
This had caramel and chocolate and was disappiontingly sweet.
We also got the Mille-feuille and it was as good as last time. I just wish it was a little bigger. My brother tried the Almond Croissant and he seemed to like it. I took a small bite and found it too sweet. I think we need a break from this place. I feel half of the time their price does not justify the size and the final product.
I have read about this place long time ago and since we were in the area for Jeni’s ice cream, I had to stop and check this place out. It is a small place but they offer high quality meat and fish. I wish they were in my area. Every neighborhood needs a place like this. They also have a very good bakery offering breads, baked goods and other goodies.
Pain au Chocolat
It tasted better than it looked. It was nice and flaky and thankfully the chocolate was dark.
I had heard about their Kouign Amann and naturally I had to try it. It was very good and not overly sugary.
We also tried their pâte de fruit and it was very good. The blood Orange was amazing with great flavor. Strawberry was more subtle. We also tried their Focaccia with bacon and cheese. It was a little salty but tasty.
