Ever since we had my birthday dinner at Gravitas back in July, I have been waiting for the brunch to start. Needless to say, we had brunch there on their second day of service. Good thing we did not go on the first day, because our waitress told us the restaurant had a power problem. Food was pretty good, but the portions were small. Service was professional.
Parisian Butter Croissant
These croissants were the highlight. They were buttery, flaky and yeasty. Great size too and worth the $4.
Braised Beef Short Rib With Poached Egg Whipped Polenta / Braised Kale / Crispy Shallots / Beef Jus
My husband picked this dish. The short rib was a small piece of a very marbled piece of meat. I took one small bite and liked it but we prefer if it was a little more meaty.
Roasted Winter Vegetables Fennel Pork Sausage / Braised Kale / Roasted Mushrooms & Root Vegetables / Sunny-Side Up Farm Egg / Farmer’s Cheese / Grilled Sourdough Bread
My dish was not what I expected. Basically a tartine of flavorful sausage, kale and egg. The tiniest mushrooms I have ever seen were there to amuse you! Sourdough bread was nicely charred.
I got this recipe from Popsugar. Pretty good bread. I reduced the sugar to make it healthier. I replaced butter for ghee.
For matcha bread:
3 cups finely ground blanched almond flour
1/4 cup ground flaxseed
1 1/2 tablespoons matcha powder
1/2 teaspoon aluminum-free baking soda
1/2 teaspoon sea or Himalayan salt
1/2 cup almond milk
2 tablespoons honey (I used maple syrup)
1 tablespoon ghee or softened virgin coconut oil
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
For rose-water Butter:
1/4 cup softened butter
1 teaspoon rosewater
1/8 teaspoon sea or Himalayan salt
To make the bread:
Preheat oven to 400ºF.
Generously grease 8 x 4 bread pan with ghee or coconut oil and set aside.
Combine all dry ingredients and mix well.
In a separate bowl, whip the eggs until well blended and fluffy, about five minutes. Add the rest of the wet components and blend until well combined.
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and combine until well mixed. Immediately add to baking pan and spread evenly.
Bake at 400ºF for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
Let cool for 30 minutes and serve with salted rose-water butter.
To make the rose-water butter:
Whip all ingredients until well combined. Spread on your favorite breads and baked goods. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
We have been to Taco Bamba’s Vienna location a few times but this was our first stop at the Chinatown location. Everything was tasty but salty. I wish they had a few low carb options like salads or lettuce wrap instead of corn or flour tortillas.
Maradona smoked brisket, grilled sweetbreads, habanero ash chimichurri
This must have been my favorite taco of all time. Smoky brisket and delicious perfectly cooked sweetbread. What’s not to like. I hope they keep this taco.
Arabe Flour Pita, Grilled Chicken, Ancho Mayo, Cucumber Pico de Gallo, Spicy Yogurt, Mint
My husband’s pick. He enjoyed it. It looked like it was a good portion.
Chivito Torta steak, ham, mortadella, Chihuahua cheese, hearts of palm, olive tapenade, fried egg
This huge Sandwich was a mix. The steak was too chewy and should have been cooked more medium. The rest was too salty but tasty. My husband had a hard time chewing the steak and skipped some of it.
French Onion Soup Mushroom and Kombu broth, Gruyere
Ever since Tom Sietsema, Washington Post food critic, wrote about Primrose’s French onion soup, I knew we had to try it. Thankfully it was what the doctor ordered on a cold March day in D.C.
The broth is not your usual. It was a very tasty mushroom kombu broth. It had plenty of gruyere but unfortunately a little too many pieces of French bread in the broth.
Croque Monsieur Black Forest ham, béchamel, Swiss cheese
It was very good but I felt the portion was a bit smaller than the last time we had it. The ham was of a very high quality and the Swiss impressed.
We have been to Federalist Pig a few times. I recently discovered that rather than getting the BBQ, we should get their really delicious sandwiches. I remember my brother while visiting us last year, raved about the pulled pork sandwich he had. After a few sandwiches, I can honestly say that you get the best bang for your buck.
Music City Spicy fried chicken breast, greens, pickles, ranch
My husband had a nerve to come to a BBQ place and get a fried chicken sandwich.😜
I was not happy about that since I don’t eat poultry and I wanted another delicious looking sandwich that I had my eyes on and wanted to share! He liked the spicy sandwich but after trying a piece of my pastrami, he regretted his decision.
Larry David pastrami, coleslaw, Swiss cheese
Great smoked pastrami sandwich. It had a spice kick probably from the coleslaw. Big enough that I took some of it home. Bread could have been a little more crusty though.
