Zaytinya was the first restaurant we tried over two years ago when we moved to the area. Our second experience was good but I felt that the portion to the price ratio was off.
Bantijan Bil Laban crispy eggplant, roasted garlic yogurt, pistachio, barberries, mint-cardamom spice
It was an interesting crispy eggplant dish. Crunchy exterior and soft interior. They could have been more generous with yogurt and pistachios. There was no sign of barberries and was replaced with unseasonably pomegranate seeds.
Octopus Santorini grilled Mediterranean octopus, marinated onions, capers, yellow split pea purée
It was a good dish. Favorite of our waitress. The octopus had nice char but a bit salty.
Hünkãr Beğendi traditional Turkish braised lamb shank, eggplant-kefalograviera purée
I felt like this dish was the best value. It was a total comfort food. Silky eggplant with mild braised lamb shank.
Petits Pois a La Francaise braised English peas, carrot and lettuce, celery root sauce, crispy sunchoke, sunflower seeds
Chef Cedric Maupillier has always been great with vegetables. So naturally I had to order this dish. It was pretty good and light. The crispy sunchokes were addicting and were covering peas, carrots and celery roots. I thought considering the ingredients, it was a bit pricy at $19.
Full English Breakfast egg, toast, beans, sausages, mushroom, tomato
I have been eyeing this dish for a year now and finally convinced my husband to get it. Guess what? He loved it. Only if he would listen to me more often!! The sausage was a bit overcooked. The black pudding was earthy and tasty. Bacon was flavorful. I wish it came with a more rustic bread than a plain old white.
The main reason one dines at the Brothers and Sisters is for the very delicious cakes. I always check out the pastry chef, Pichet Ong, instagram every week. He is one lucky guy traveling the world and eating great food. I noticed they had a new cake and I called to make sure they were offering it that day and lucky for us they were. Not only that but the stars were aligned and we even saw and met chef Ong!
Dry Aged Beef Burger Bleu Cheese Aioli / Bacon Jam
This was the new burger and it was pretty good competing for one of my favorite burgers one level up at the Rake’s Progress.
Takoyaki Hushpuppies Tare / Octopus
A good deal at $11 and very filling. There were a little octopus in the hushpuppies and was sitting on a very salty soy based sauce.
The Next Vacation (Taipei) Matcha Chiffon Cake, Berry Mousse, Sencha Tea Jellies, Japanese Adzuki Bean Paste
OK, finally the reason we were there. It looked very pretty and was a perfect late spring cake. Berries and matcha, match made in heaven. I was tempted to order a second cake but my body rejected that idea! Bad body.
We have been to Little Sesame’s other location before but it was our first time at the Chinatown location. We preferred the mezze dishes to the pita sandwich. Service was fine.
Roasted cauliflower, salt roasted onion, charred ramps, sorrel
It was an earthy dish. Sorrel was fresh and tasty.
Eggplant, pickled red cabbage, tahini, schug
We really liked the roasted eggplant so much, next time we want to get two each. Soft roasted eggplant went well with the crunchy cabbage. Tahini provided a creamy bitter goodness. Schug added spiciness.
Pastured lamb shawarma Sumac onions, pea shoots and amba
I asked if they would cut the pita sandwich in half for us. First she said no, then she said she would ask the kitchen. Not only they did not cut it for us but they had no knifes so you could cut it yourself. Great customer service! The shawarma was not what we expected. It was more like a pulled lamb. It was fine but at $12, you could get three eggplant mezze dishes!
