Night + Market has been on my radar for a long time. When I read that Anthony Bourdain picked it as one of his favorite places in LA and saw some pictures in one of the blogs I have been reading, that motivated me to make my reservation. As the title says this place was a joy in terms of flavors and a pain because it was so very spicy. Their sticky rice was the best my husband has had. Service was mixed. Some servers were more friendly and helpful than others.
Odd looking glassware and awkward to drink from.
Moo Sadoong | ‘Startled Pig’
This dish was the highlight. It was spicy as hell, but surprisingly delicious. The pork was grilled perfectly, the Basil and Lemongrass gave it a great perfume, Lime added brightness, Fish Sauce and Garlic provided flavor and finally Chile the burning sensation that I still remember. Considering how spicy it was we could not stop eating it.
Kua Gling | Border Beef
Thin slices Short Ribs stir fried with Southern Chile Paste was very good too, considering how simple it was. This, too put our mouth on fire.
Nam Khao Tod | Crispy Rice Salad
This is my favorite Thai dish and considering how many bad versions we have tried, I was hoping I would not be disappointed. I told my husband if I liked it, I would order a second one. As I took my first bite, I was delighted with joy and I said I want a second one. A minute later my mouth was on fire and I reconsidered, but that didn’t stop me from finishing every morsel of that dish.
Sai Krok Isaan | Isaan Sour Sausage
This was the last dish we were served, surprisingly since usually the sausage is the first dish to hit the table. It was the best and most flavorful Issan Sour Sousage we have ever had. It was not dried out like some sausages out there. It was very juicy and perfect and a must order. The crunchy Cabbage gave it nice textural contrast and tamed the dish a little bit.
Ice Cream Sandwich
After all that heat we needed a little cooling down and this Ice Cream Sandwich did the job. The Coconut Ice cream was pretty good and went well with the toasted sweet bread and sticky rice. A little carb heavy but tasty.
