After I saw the pictures of their food and read the mostly glowing reviews I was excited to try this place. While we were in the cab on the way to the restaurant I told my brother and husband that I think La Folie restaurant is located on the same street. As we got out of the cab I couldn’t believe that Verbena was directly across the street from La Folie. What a small world!! After I looked at the menu none of the main dishes appealed to me with the exception of the veggie one, so I suggested that we order from the top and the middle part of the menu. We started with one of my favorites of the night, Sprouted Seed Bread, Chevre, Beet Sauerkraut. This was the tastiest, crunchiest, seediest bread that I have ever had. The Chevre added creaminess and Beet Sauerkraut added color and a little texture to the dish. I could eat that bread every day. Our second dish was a light dish of Asparagus with Mustard Greens, Egg Yolk, Bottarga, Green Garlic. It had a pleasing umami taste and a reminder that Spring had arrived. Our next dish, Beets and Strawberries, Black Walnut-Beet Miso, Ginger, Wild Arugula, Oxalis was very pretty and tasty if you like Beets. I prefer raw to cooked Beets, but still enjoyed this dish especially the sweet strawberries and the flavorful Walnut beet Miso sauce. Meatballs braised in Black Mole, Russian Kale, Hominy, Whey was a nice dish. The Meatballs were cooked perfectly and were served over a flavorful Hominy, but my brother said the Mole was not as impressive as Rick Bayless’s Mole. Of course there are hundreds of recipes for different mole sauces. The only dish we didn’t really enjoy was the Pork Sausage with Nettle puree and Fava Beans. I found the sausage fine, but the sauce didn’t have much flavor and it was a little bitter. The best dish of the night was the only veggie main dish and I am glad we went for this over other fish or meat dishes. Seared Artichoke, Asparagus, Snap Peas with Rutabaga Cheddar sauce was amazing. It had so much flavor and texture from different veggies, Parmesan bread crumbs, Miso sauce and the cheese sauce. It was a good size dish and all the veggies were prepared expertly. Even though we were really full, we shared the Chocolate dessert with Caramel and the very delicious Nettles ice cream. Our server was very informative and friendly and we had a great time.
