I have heard so much about the location of this restaurant in Downtown East and the fact that ever since they opened in Feb, they had been target of protesters fighting back against the gentrification of downtown East Side and picketing in front of the restaurant on a nightly basis. The location was not ideal, because it was across from the Pigeon Park where mentally ill and homeless gathered, but a lot of young Chefs can only afford this kind of neighborhoods. After our lunch at Meat & Bread we checked out the location of PidGin and already knew what was waiting for us.
We almost had the whole place to ourselves, since only one other table was occupied. We were offered any place we like to seat and chose the Chef table facing the kitchen. My husband was going to order their tasting menu, but I convinced him of selecting our own tasting menu. We started with the very delicious Oyster Shot with Apple and Horseradish. It was very refreshing and a great start. The combination of apple Granita with horseradish and oyster was great. Octopus, White Soy Ponzu and Daikon was visually beautiful and tasted good enough, but it needed something to jazz it up. We really enjoyed the Mushrooms with Sugar Snap Peas, Egg and Soy Yuzu Brown Butter. It had a great Umami flavor with flavorful mushrooms and pea puree and we could have easily eaten another plate of this great dish. Braised Beef, Fennel, Soy Lime Syrup was a fine dish, but the sauce needed to be more flavorful. I guess they left the best dish for last and it was Foie Gras Rice Bowl with Chestnuts, Daikon and Unagi glaze. This dish must have been one of the best Foie Gras dishes we have ever had. The chesrnuts gave it an earthy taste and the Unagi glaze was amazing. We finished our meal with Peanut Butter Parfait with Salted Caramel and Banana Puree. It was a nice dessert, but on the sweet side. Service was very attentive and it was fun to receive some of the dishes directly from the kitchen through the lazy Susan style table. I wish them luck.
