Yellowfin Tuna Tartare, Asian Pear, Avocado, Chili Oil, Fried Rice, Cilantro
It was a flavorful dish and we liked the crunchy fried rice against the soft tuna.
Fried local Oysters, Smoked Potatoes, Leeks, Crème FraÎche
It was a nice dish. The oysters tasted fresh and were fried just right. Leeks gave it a touch of sweetness and the smoked potatoes balanced the dish.
Caramelized Diver Scallops, Cauliflower, Capers, Almonds, Golden Raisins
At $31 for four scallops, you want perfectly seared scallops. You can see that the first and the third ones were overdone. The rest of the dish had a nice earthy, sweet and briny balance.
Prime New York Steak, Short Rib, Braised Potato, Bacon, Parsnip, Wild Mushroom
It was a fine dish, but nothing exciting. The steak even though prime, lacked much flavor. The short rib was OK and the braised potato could have used some kind of herb or seasoning to perk it up.
I knew this restaurant has been around for a long time and was not sure if I should keep it as one of our two dinner plans in Napa Valley. I researched big time before hand but there were not that many interesting, creative restaurants in the Valley. I even asked locals and at the last minute one of the art gallery owners gave Redd an endorsement and we decided to stick to our plans. we had a good start with our first courses but the service was kind of shaky. As soon as the scallop dish hit our table I realized it was overcooked. I didn’t want to complain before cutting into it. As we each cut into our scallops, our fears were confirmed. We didn’t see our waiter for a while and decided to eat the dish and move on to our steak dish. That dish was nothing amazing, but at least it was cooked right. When we saw our waiter we told him about the scallop dish and he said he will let the kitchen know!! That is the new way of saying we don’t care. I decided we should skip dessert and the waiter presented our bill without any mention of the overcooked dish. I asked him if he communicated with the kitchen and he said he told the manager. What a customer service!! The least they could have done was for the manager to come over and apologize for their mistake, but I guess that was too much to ask for. Their prices are too high for the quality of the food, the execution mistakes and the not so polish service.
